Volunteering for IPSEA

I joined IPSEA in 2016 as a volunteer. I was unsure what to expect; when I attended the face-to-face training in London, I was inspired by the Legal Manager’s passion and confidence in ensuring parents/carers know their rights.

I have a significant background in education, and I’ve experienced the challenges families face when advocating for SEND children. With its labyrinth of legalities and bureaucratic hurdles, the educational system can be overwhelming for families.

As a volunteer, my role primarily involves offering telephone advice to parents and carers. Each case has an emotional weight, and parents and carers often reach out in moments of desperation and frustration. I listen empathetically and provide clear, concise advice, which requires a delicate balance of compassion and professionalism.

I feel very privileged knowing that my guidance can lead a child or young person to receive the support they need to thrive in their educational environment. The gratitude expressed by parents, often in the form of heartfelt emails, cards and feedback, is incredibly motivating.

As a volunteer, I’ve developed a deeper understanding of SEND law, enhanced my problem-solving skills, and improved my ability to communicate complex information in an accessible manner. To be honest, it’s a role that challenges, educates, and fulfils me in ways I hadn’t anticipated. I would describe volunteering as a mutually beneficial exchange. The experience enriches the lives of those we assist and profoundly enhances our perspectives and skills.

I recommend joining IPSEA for those who share a passion for education and social justice. Our work is not just a job, and every volunteer has the potential to make a real difference in the lives of children and families.
